J&J India to Pay Compensation of ~$28K per Patient for Faulty Hip Implant

  • Indian drug regulator CDSCO- has ordered J&J to pay Rs 20 Lakh (~$28K) as interim compensation to all patients received hip implants- after recommendation from government-appointed committee. Also J&J has to extend its medical management till 2025- along with compensation
  • As per J&J 4-700 patients in India have received these implants however 3-600 patients yet to be track down. J&J has also agreed to pay $2.5B to 8-000 patients in 2013 for faulty implants in the US
  • J&J has globally recalled ASR hip implants since 2010- based on leaking of chromium and cobalt which creates toxicity in human body
